If you’re working with Avon, you’re working with the first, and arguably the best, of the MLM giants. But how do you stand out as a representative for a business that has more than five million representatives in more than 100 countries?

Clearly, old-school MLM strategies aren’t going to work when we’re talking about selling Avon. Yes, you’re likely to get a warmer reception from your friends and family when you’re selling Avon than you are with any other MLM opportunity or product. But it’s also much more likely that the people on your warm list already know and do business with an Avon rep!

To succeed with Avon, then, you’re going to have to destroy the box, not just think outside of it.

The first thing you need to do to set yourself apart and start succeeding with Avon is to forget about selling Avon. Sound contradictory? Well, how many people already know almost everything there is to know about Avon’s products? Millions of people, right?

But how many people know about you? Let’s just say that number probably isn’t as high as the number of people who know Avon. This brings us to the first rule of succeeding in any MLM business:

When you’re doing network marketing, you’re not selling a product. You’re not selling a business opportunity. You’re selling yourself.

In order to be as successful as you can be with Avon or any other MLM, first you need to brand yourself. What is your personal story? Are you a single mom who has worked yourself out of debt and into financial freedom? Are you a veteran? Do your friends know that if they need advice about anything related to cosmetics, health, or fashion, you’re the one to call?

These are the kinds of things you need to promote about yourself. Why? Because by telling your story and sharing the unique things about you that make you special, you will attract people who are like you and people who want to be like you. This is called “attraction marketing,” and it’s the most powerful selling tool in today’s MLM industry.

There’s another aspect of attraction marketing that you need to keep in mind as you’re building your personal brand and your Avon business. What topics are you an expert in? Are you the person your friends call with questions about fashion and cosmetics? Do you know Yoga or personal training?

Or are you already successful with aspects of your Avon business and able to give others advice so they can duplicate your success?

Great! In that case, you don’t want to stop at attracting people who are like you. Instead, you want to focus on people who want to be like you by positioning yourself as a leader. How do you do that? You offer advice on your areas of expertise. People like to learn directly from other people rather than from dry textbooks or articles without a personal voice. Then, at the end of each lesson or bit of advice you give away, you can remind people about your Avon business.

Now that you know the “what” – attraction marketing – it’s time to move on to the “how.” What tools can you use to market your brand as widely as possible so people come to know and trust you and your business?

The most important thing you can do is to take your Avon business online. Avon seems to require that their representatives’ personal websites focus on the Avon brand and products. In order to market your personal brand as much as possible, then, consider starting up a blog that you use to brand yourself, and then direct visitors to your Avon site from there.

You can use the blog to talk about your Avon experience, your personal story, and to give advice on the areas you’re an expert in. In other words, to let people know why they want to buy Avon products through you as opposed to working with anyone else!

Once your business is online, the next step is to start promoting your business and your personal brand. You can do this by using free article distribution websites to post articles where you tell your personal story and where you give more advice. Be sure to include a backlink to your Avon business website with each article – this will drive traffic to your website and raise your site’s search engine rankings.

Once you have those tools working for you, it’s time to join social networking sites like Twitter and FaceBook. You can use these sites to give away advice, tell your story, and post links to the articles you have on your website and on the article distribution sites.

No matter how big Avon is, you can use the power of the Internet to make yourself and your Avon business stand out and get noticed. All you have to do is combine the power of attraction marketing with the reach of the Internet. You’ll be absolutely shocked at what this combination can do for your business!
