KipKarl Kip Herriage and Karl Bessey | Wealth MastersAnyone who has spent any time at all evaluating today’s latest and greatest Multi Level Marketing (MLM) opportunity has undoubtedly come across Wealth Masters International (WMI). The five-year-old company, with gross revenues expected to eclipse the $1 billion mark in 2010, boasts one of the direct marketing industry’s most sought-after opportunities.

The company was founded in 2005 by Kip Herriage, 47, and Karl Bessey, 53, two men with astonishingly different backgrounds who became business partners and friends. Herriage was a Wall Street prodigy who made millions and then prematurely threw in the towel at age 38 to find his true calling. Bessey worked the coalmines of Utah for 22 years before he realized that there had to be a better way.

The vision that Herriage and Bessey shared was to create success and wealth in others—one person at a time—as the world’s premier wealth creation community. The two set out to enable ordinary people to create success on their own terms while achieving true freedom in all areas of their lives. Based on sales figures, and the fact that the company operates debt free, it appears as though the two have achieved what they set out to do.

Kip Herriage

Herriage ended his Wall Street career as a money manager and VP of Investments for Raymond James, one of the largest financial services companies in the United States. A product of a lower-middle-class upbringing, Herriage put himself through college with the sole goal of making a lot of money. He became a financial advisor and made his way into the rarefied air of Wall Street, where he was promoted to Vice President at industry icon Oppenheimer at the tender age of 28.

Less than 10 years later, Herriage was through with it. On a weeklong getaway with 100 top executives of his company—accompanied by his wife and kids—Herriage had an epiphany. He realized that he was terribly unhappy, and despite his fat Wall Street salary and vast accumulated wealth, he knew there had to be something different.

Four months after that he quit his job and embarked on Phase 2 of his career. The only stumbling block was that he had no idea what Phase 2 would entail – but he decided to figure it out as he went. It was later that same year – 1999 – that he met future business partner Bessey.

Karl Bessey

Bessey came to the WMI table from a radically different avenue. Married at a young age, Bessey was blessed with his first child at age 20. Without a degree and needing to support his growing family, he decided to work as a coalminer in order to take advantage of the “big money” miners made, along with full health benefits. In addition to the stress and incredible danger of working underground, Bessey commuted 65 miles each way to and from work, every day.

In 1984, Bessey was pressed into service as a rescue miner and underground firefighter during the Walberg Mine disaster. While his future business partner was navigating the cutthroat corridors of Wall Street, Bessey was pulling dead bodies from a flaming coalmine.

The difficulties and physical risk of the job notwithstanding, Bessey needed the job for the money and the health care. He began thinking about other options and tested the waters but remained tethered to the mines. He started a body shop in his spare time, but it was too labor intensive alongside of his job in the mines.

Desperate for a way out, Bessey started to dabble with MLM. He sold fuel additives and even insurance. From there, his network marketing roots become a little fuzzy – his WMI bio doesn’t really name his next MLM venture. Industry insiders claim, however, that Bessey’s next affiliation was with Liberty League, International.

He started to see some MLM success, but then tragedy struck once again when his best friend was killed in a coal mining accident. That was the catalyst that sent Bessey packing. He quit his job and began to pursue his MLM gig full time.

And it is apparently Liberty League that brought Bessey and Herriage together, when they met at a company event in December of 1999. And an unlikely meeting it was – the elegant, uber-successful young former Wall Street tycoon rubbing shoulders with the older, hardscrabble miner who had rapidly become a network marketing top earner.

The two stayed in touch for the next five years until Herriage made the call to Bessey—on December 4, 2004—that would ultimately result in the formation of WMI the following year.

Based on their diverse backgrounds, the success of WMI should come as no surprise. Herriage is the financial and investment guru who masterminds the company’s financial products. Bessey is the hard-working, blue collar, network marketing pro who put together the nuts and bolts of the company’s business model.

It is an unlikely partnership – no doubt about it. But the company’s success is clearly evident, and with these two complementary captains at the helm, it will, by all accounts, undoubtedly continue well into the foreseeable future.
